Year 1990, XI Asian Games in Beijing, I went to a new stadium to watch a Hand-ball game between China and Japan. I didn’t understand the game at all, but when China started to fall behind on the score board and struggled to come back, as I still remember, I cried. When a loss was certain, I walked out of the stadium with my parents before the game finishes. Today’s Daily Mirror would’ve been torn into pieces by that kid 16 years ago.
Instead, I was literally laughing when I read this article last night at the pub. I actually agree with the “a mass of tangled metal” bit. I didn’t fancy the idea when they first brought the model out 4 years ago. But however controversial it is, we built it. Doesn’t matter how ugly it might look in some people’s eyes, we Chinese can now build anything we want on our home soil, not like 200 years ago, even the right of constructing our domestic railways were in foreign hands. It might not be the British’s cup of tea, but that’s the only offer they’ll get from the game host, China.
The more I look at that photo, the more strength I can feel from that structure. It is a bit messy by the first look, but I believe no “noodle” can stand up that high holding 91,000 people. When the “Bird’s Nest” finishes, I won’t be surprised if the English presses give it another name like “Phoenix’s Nest” or “Dragon’s Den”.
